Chipped beef is a grade of pressed, salted and dried beef that has been sliced into sparse pieces. Some makers smoke the dried beefiness for more season. The mod product consists of small, sparse, flexible leaves of partially dried beef, more often than not sold compressed together in jars or apartment in plastic packets. The candy meat producer Hormel once described it as "an air-dried product that is similar to bresaola, only not as tasty."[i]

Chipped beef could be used to make frizzled beef (creamed chipped beefiness or SOS in military slang), or with eggs.[2]

Chipped beef is served in many diners and restaurants in the U.s.a. equally a breakfast particular. The meat itself is also available for purchase under the Knauss and Carson'south Brand names. Steak-umm is used equally a substitute.[5]
Chipped beefiness on toast [edit]
Chipped beef on toast (or creamed chipped beef on toast) is a dish comprising a white sauce and rehydrated slivers of dried beef, served on toasted staff of life. Hormel recommends flavoring the dish with Worcestershire sauce.[6] Chipped beefiness is besides oft served on bagels, English language muffins, biscuits, domicile fries, rice, mashed murphy and in casserole.
U.S. military cuisine [edit]
In the U.s., chipped beefiness on toast was normally served to service members of the United States Armed forces from World War I through Vietnam. Information technology was considered allegorical of the war machine feel and consequently also served to Boy Scouts of the era.[7] In American military slang it is ordinarily referred to by the dysphemism "Shit On a Shingle" (SOS).[viii]

Ingredients used:
xv pounds chipped beef
1 i/ii pound of fat, butter preferred

Stir the batter in slowly to prevent lumping, and so add together the beef. Cook a few minutes, add the parsley, and serve on toast. If the beef is very salty, it should be scalded before cooking.

Wentworth and Flexner cite no origin for the term, just noted "shingle" for slice of toast has had "some utilise since 1935" in the U.South. Army, mostly in the expression "shit on a shingle", and the latter had "broad Globe War 2 Army utilize".[eleven]
Chipped Beef on Toast (S.O.S.) is the championship of a book of military sense of humour.[12] In his World State of war Ii book Band of Brothers, Stephen East. Ambrose evokes the military basics:
